Home Mormons Bible vs. Mormon Doctrine

Son of God, same ontology/essence as God the Father, perfect in every way, incarnation both fully God and fully man, without beginning/end, dwells within His people (John 14:9, Eph 4:6, John 10:30, John 8:58)

Different than God the Father, became a god before coming to earth (in lesson), cannot/does not dwell inside people

Without beginning, without end, infinite in being, knowledge, and power, predestined all that has happened and going to happen Eph 1:4

One of many gods, born like us by a father and mother, limited, unable to change hearts and minds, once was imperfect and sinned, then became perfect

Created being, separate from God in essence, limited in creation, will continue to be limited in death, utterly sinful, did NOT exist prior to conception, will either go to heaven or hell

Same essence as Heavenly Father, can transform from lowly man to exulted god

Is always present in everyone from the day they are conceived, affects everything we do, “Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.” Psalm 51:5,

“For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith.” Romans 3:23-25

Specific sins include lust, anger, impatience, and lying, pride

Children born without sin (Words of Moroni 8), sin in events, people are not totally sinful – do sinful things, are not sinners (in lesson)

Goal of Salvation

Peace with God, “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 5:1

Ability to stand blamelessly in God's presence after death, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Romans 8:1

Being with God, being bound for eternity with spouse and children, populating new planets through normal means

Assurance of Salvation

Saved instantly and permanently upon repentance, and saving faith; salvation cannot be taken away, John 10:29

No assurance at all, salvation revealed at later judgment (in lesson), assurance depends on strength of testimony

Saved From

Hell and eternal damnation and wrath of God, very real and very deadly

Vague, not sure (in lesson), hell mentioned in D+C 123 by Joseph Smith, downplayed in lessons as not important, hell = lack of fulfillment of true potential

How Saved

“Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9

Works, earned according to various Mormon leaders, requires baptism and marriage (D+C 131)

Who has the truth

The Bible, and the Bible alone, as it is the only true revelation from God

Joseph Smith's writings & the continuing words of prophets

Sign of entrance into Christ’s visible church and a seal of entrance for true believers, comes after faith and repentance, should not be done before demonstrating faith

Required for salvation, actually washes away sins, can come before faith and repentance

the accuser, a fallen angel, not of the same character or nature of Jesus, a created being, deceiver of the nations, will be cast into hell with unbelievers on Judgment day

Brother of Jesus, had alternate plan to save everyone immediately, implied as on same level as Jesus (in lesson)

On the cross, effectual for all sin of believers

Romans 5:8- "But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."

Romans 5:10- For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by His life."

Hebrews 9:22 states that without the shedding (not sweating) of blood, there is no remission of sins.

Gesthemane, focus on the pain and suffering of Christ so that he can identify and sympathize with our sins

The Bible

Inspired Word of God, sufficient and necessary for anything in life, the source of truth and perfect (2 Tim 3:16); its accuracy supported by substantial historical and archaeological evidence

Corrupt and full of errors, quoted at length, however (Intro to book)

Since the completion of the Bible (closing of the canon), prophecy is only re-telling what God has already revealed, no NEW prophecy since the canon was closed; Bible warns of false prophets.

New revelation continues to come from God through the prophets even if it contradicts previous revelation or doctrine

Christ declares ALL foods clean -"it is not what goes into a man that makes him unclean, but what comes out of the heart." Mark 7:19, Colossians 2:20-23

Certain foods proscribed against with the threat of God's wrath for using them - D+C 89

How the Gospel is Revealed

Christ gave the fullness of the Gospel, the Bible contains the entire Gospel & contains all knowledge that is necessary for salvation.

The Bible contains only part of the Gospel, needs the other writings for completeness

Need for Restoration

There has never been a need for restoration as God has always had His people on earth. There has always been a remnant of believers, "gates of Hell will NEVER prevail against the Church" Matt 16:18

Cyclical apostasies, last apostasy lasted almost 1500 years, roughly

Pray for those who persecute you, do good to them Matt 5:24 & Matt 5:44,

Told to keep a record of wrongs against you (D+C 123)

Gifts from God out of His mercy & favor; both wicked & righteous get material blessings Matt 5:45

Earned by obedience to the law (D+C 130:20-21)
